The River's Edge
“Underground Railroad” began as a very quick monoprint of the moon-lit Ohio River. As I studied it, I was reminded of the crossing point at Dover, KY, to the home of abolitionist John Rankin in Ripley, OH. His home high on a hill overlooking the river was a beacon of hope and freedom. I have driven by this spot many times over the years. Pastels were added over the top of the monoprint in a technique developed by Edgar Degas.
